X Factor Heartbreak

Ex-Academy student Jade Richards missed out on a place in the X Factor finals by the narrowest of margins to Irish singer Janet Devlin.

We’re certain the story won’t be stopping there for Jade though! Olly Murs, 2009 finalist and Xtra Factor host, has got faith in Jade. He told stv.tv: “Jade’s brilliant, she’s got a fantastic voice. She’s someone, you know, who has got a great recording voice and she could go on and do great things.”

Jade added: “This is only the beginning. It definitely won’t be the last you hear from me.”

We completely agree with Olly and Jade and wish her the best of luck.

Jade studied with the Academy at our Edinburgh Centre on our 2 year Diploma course.

Exeter’s first official music release of 2011!

Exeter’s high flying Academy of Music and Sound are pleased to announce their first official musical release of 2011.

Song writing student Jamie Beale and his band JB and the Backline featuring fellow students Haz Wheaton, Tristan Evans and Dan Chase release their debut single ‘Bloodshot Eyes’ on Tuesday 17th May with a launch party at The Academy in Coombe Street.

The single is available for worldwide download and is part of the Academy’s ‘write music, record music, release music’ programme which has already proved a launch pad for some of the South West’s finest young musical talent.

Last year Academy student Tom Andrews was signed live on American network Television by Pop Idol Judge Ellen Degeneres.

Centre manager Steve Ryan says: “My colleagues and myself consider ourselves very fortunate to be working with some extraordinarily talented young musicians here in Exeter.

Jamie and his band have shown that a great work ethic combined with a talent for writing great pop songs is always a winner. They deserve their break….”

Anyone interested in attending the launch party for ‘Bloodshot Eyes’ should call the Academy to book a place on 01392 427874.

Jam with the Jaxx!

This Sunday, 8th May, The Academy of Music and Sound will be giving year 11 musicians from 32 local schools the exciting opportunity to experience a free workshop day at their premises at 89 Old Snow Hill, Birmingham. They will be joined by Nathan & Oli – friends of The Academy, and percussionist and drummer for world-famous band Basement Jaxx - to deliver the workshops.

The morning session will place participants in instrument-specific workshops for guitar, bass, drums and vocals with the Academy’s BTEC and Foundation Degree tutors, as preparation for the Jaxx masterclass.

Basement Jaxx Drummer, Nathan Curran, has worked with the likes of Lily Allen, Lady Sovereign, MC Kano and recorded with artists such as Tinchy Stryder and James Morrison to name but a few. Percussionist Oli Savill has featured on hundreds of recordings with celebrities such as Sly and Robbie, LuLu, Tom Jones and has toured with the Pet Shop Boys.

David McGrain, Birmingham Centre Manager said: “The lads have worked with The Academy for a long time now and it’s always a successful day when they come back to share their skills.

We offer over 60 places on our FE and HE courses every year; and the best of Sunday’s workshop participants will be invited to a free Audition Day on Sunday May 22nd to see if they have what it takes to succeed here. Oli and Nathan will give them the perfect preparation for this.

Those who are successful at audition will be offered a place on one of the Academy’s instrument specific courses, ranging from NVQs and BTECs through to Degree level, all of which provide relevant, practical training for young people seeking to pursue a career in the music industry.”
